Hats off to director Boopathy Pandian and Vishal for dishing out a commercial entertainer which is racy from the word go. Known for doing action-packed roles, Vishal has tried his hand at comedy and has come out clean rendering a noteworthy performance.

With established stars like Kannada actor Devaraj, Ashish Vidyarthi and Priya Mani around, Boopathy Pandian has churned out a typical 'masala' film, which is sure to go down well with the masses.

After Thamirabarani, Vishal makes amends hogging all the limelight in Malaikottai.

The first half is packed with humour and romance while the latter half is filled with stunning action sequences. Handling both with comfort is Vishal. The tall and dark hero of Tamil cinema has announced his arrival to the big league with the movie.

After a serious portrayal in Paruthiveeran, Priya Mani has taken to glamour in the movie. She appears in skimpy costumes and shakes her legs for peppy tunes. Ashish Vidyarthi in the company of Urvashi evokes laughter.

Anbu (Vishal) is a happy go-lucky youngster who later picks up brawl with a local politician. A case is registered against him and he is forced to leave Pudukottai on a conditional bail, provided he signs the register in a Tiruchi police station.

At Tiruchi, he comes across Malar (Priya Mani) a college girl and falls for her. The inspector at the police station Kanthaswamy (Ashish Vidyarti) happens to be his uncle. Kamala (Urvasi) is the lady constable at the station. Kanthaswamy and Kamala were ex-lovers and scenes describing their romance lead to instant laughter.

Palani (Devaraj), a powerful politico controls the whole town. Along with his brother Guna (Ajay), Palani infuses terror in the hearts of the local people and virtually controls the town with his men.

Anbu ends up getting the wrath of Guna when he saves Malar from a difficult situation. Sequence of events leads Anbu to launch a crusade to bump over both Palani and Guna. And how he goes about achieving the mission forms the crux.

Kanal Kannan's stunts are a major highlight. Especially the climax flight on a rainy street in Matrix style deserves a special mention.

Mani Sharma's music is catchy especially the remix number ‘Hey Atha Athorama’. The film almost is predictable. But still is a good fast moving entertainer.

Sarath Kumar's Nam Nadu is a important film for Sarath Kumar, which has hit the screen at a time when the actor has taken a new avatar of a political party leader. Interestingly, the movie dwells on the political ideologies of Sarath Kumar and is more a political propaganda film from Sarath.

A remake of Malayalam hit Lion, the movie is directed by Suresh, who in the past had churned out hits like Arasu and Gambheeram starring Sarath Kumar.

Nam Nadu throws light on the contemporary political scenario in the State and the need to cleanse the system. In brief, it is about a youth, who goes on to become a State Minister with a mission to render good governance.

The emotional drama between a father and son forms the backdrop. Alavandhar (Nasser), the corrupt Education Minister wants to become the Chief Minister. With his son-in-laws Sathya and Ilamaran (Saran Raj and Ponvannan), an IPS & IAS officer respectively, he tries all means to disturb peace in the State and end up becoming the Chief Minister.

But the father meets his match in the son Mutthazhagan (Sarath Kumar). A honest youth wing leader of the ruling party, Mutthazhagan opposes his father.

Realizing that he should be in power to take on is father, Mutthazhagan contests elections against his father. He defeats his father and eventually becomes the Home Minister.

How he goes to cleanse the system forms the crux.

Sarath Kumar fits the bill well. As an aspiring politician, he has brought out his emotions well. In action-packed scenes, Sarath Kumar is at the helm. Nasser impresses as the corrupt politician. Ramesh Kanna with his comical dialogues does contribute his best.

Debutant heroine Karthika has had an average outing. She appears in few scenes and couple of romantic duets. The rest of the cast includes Vijayakumar, Manivannan, Saran Raj, Ponvannan, Pragathy, Riyaz Khan, Deepu, Abhitha, Raj Kapoor and Sriman.

Director Suresh has rendered a 'formula' film devoid of any item numbers, lewd dialogues and gore scenes.

On the flip side, several scenes lacks conviction and the songs prove a hurdle to the pace of the screenplay.

Vijay plays both hero and villain. The first half is filled with romance and a mystery surrounding Vijay’s Extra Sensory Perception (ESP), while the second half is dominated by the tug of war between the two Vijays.

Shreya, arguably possessing the most stunning and sexy figure among today’s heroines is simply ravishing. She and the director, of course, pretty well know that acting is not her forte and hence bank on her USP, which is her curvaceous body, to make the proceedings, especially the songs attractive. Namitha is effectively used for a scintillating song.

A.R. Rahman’s music is outstanding. In fact that songs sound better when heard – and seen – in the movie. ‘Maduraiku Pokaathey’ and ‘Valaiyapatti’ are quite attractive. The remix version is more convincing when seen in the context.

Prabhu (Dhanush) who has just now brutally attacked three thugs with a sword comes out of the building and rests his wounded body on his beloved bike. He is now heading towards meeting his praise catch that is Ravi (Danial Balaji), the younger brother of all powerful mafia leader of North Chennai Selvam (Kishor Kumar). He recalls, for a moment, what that bike has brought to him before moving ahead for his hunt.

The flash back shows the happy-go-lucky boy longing for a Pulsar bike. It goes to show the life in a North Chennai street where life is quite difference from that of South Chennai. The boys are playing carom board on the street. Prabhu is sharing the pain of his failure to get what he loves most - a bike and a girl.

Director Vettrimaran has come out with an engrossing and realistic experience on celluloid.

Director and his team have done their home work neatly. They have captured the dialects, mannerisms, and life style of the underworld mafia group with precision. The film has also unearthed some hitherto unexplored areas like bike theft network. He has also illustrated the functions of a modern banking network well.

The characterization too is worth mentioning. Especially the character of Selvam. The nuances of father-son relationship too have been portrayed well. Well done Vettrimaran!

R. Velraj, the cameraman, deserves special mention. He has worked wonders in capturing the gruesome reality of the underworld. The lighting in various time spaces is wonderful. The picturisation of climax fight is outstanding. Daniel Balaji, Bhavan, and Kishor Kumar have brought the underworld with all its colors and shades with astonishing perfection. They all have lived up to the expectations of the director and have added credibility to the reality of the movie.

Young music director G.V. Prakash has done wonders. The songs, which are already rocking, are well picturised. The remix version of ‘Engeyum Eppothum’ stands out. One wonders how SPB has maintained the sweetness of his voice for so many years. Yogi B, the sensational Malaysian singer is a revelation. ‘Minnalgaley’ sung by Karthik and Bombay Jayashree is a soothing melody. The background score adds value to the entire proceedings.

Kireedam is a sensible and sincere attempt at realistic entertainment. And after a long time, Ajith looks very cool and relaxed --- actually a throwback to his hey days --- and showcases his undoubted histrionic talent with spunk. Trisha, as an impish college girl, shines and brings to fore her growing felicity with comedy.

But the film is not about the funny bone; it deals with a tender and touching relationship between a father and son. A dream that a doting dad has for his ward and how fate undoes all the desires through a catena of compelling events forms the bulwark of this sturdy story.

A remake of the Malayalam hit of the 80s, the film scores because its core is about humanism and the values that bond all cultured beings. Kireedam is a commercial movie, alright. But there is no over-the-top heroic stuff that undid all the recent Ajith movies. Kireedam’s strength is its low-key elegance, and letting honesty of life take over. Ajith has consciously avoided the pitfalls of his previous movies and dishes out a delightful performance.

The natural bonding between a father and son is brought out spontaneously by Ajith and Raj Kiran, who it must be said, has managed to re-invent himself as a bankable middle-class dad onscreen. The slow-paced movie holds your attention through its smart soft-focus moments in everyday life. The ebb and flow of everyday emotions gets the right treatment from AL Vijay, the director. He sure knows how to mix the various ingredients, and shows a level-headedness that can stand him in good stead for long.

Sakthivel (Ajith) is an implicitly obedient son of a sincere policeman, Rajarajan (Raj Kiran). Sakthi and his dad’s dream is the same: That of seeing him enter the police force. The entire family comprising two other daughters, the mom (Saranya) and a wastrel of a brother-in-law (Vivek) are cuddly and close-knit. Rajarajan is from the old school of life and honesty is his watchword. In a venal system, this lands him in trouble often.

Divya (Trisha), a college girl, is a charming full-of-beans girl. She has some comical run-ins with Sakthi, and eventually falls in love with him. Elsewhere, Rajarajan, who books a MLA’s son for an offence, is hauled up over the coals and sent on a ‘punishment transfer’ to a place, which is run as personal fief by a local dada (Ajay). On thing leads to another, and Sakthi is unwittingly sucked into the unholy vortex. Just as he is about to join the police force, destiny decrees otherwise: His life is not going to be the same again. A dad’s dream lies shattered while a son, despite his unwillingness, has to fight a honest war beyond the matrix of a law. It is a situation that is actually an emotional cauldron. How the dad and son reconcile to the new reality is the story.

Ajith as Sakthi is suave and oozes quiet charm initially, and shows the desired intensity when taking on the baddies. There is a new maturity to his work reflecting his calmness in real life. The exchanges between him and Raj Kiran are almost tangible in its realism. The romantic interludes are all-out fun. The bonding between Ajith and Trisha is cool and has the right comic touches.

Trisha shines in this effervescent character and manages to leave a lasting impact. Her comic timing is a big revelation and she manages to hold her own against the likes of Vivek and Santhanam, the established comedians. Surely, this is one of her most enthusiastic performances.

Raj Kiran comes up with all the right touches and adds dignity to the role, which was made memorable in the original by Thilakan. Saranya does the mother role with ease and poise. Vivek and Santhanam provide the right humorous touches at the right moments. The villains have nothing extraordinary to offer. KPAC Lalitha as the grandmother is adequate.

The other main show-stealer is G V Prakash. The young musician has shown that his performance in Veyyil is no flash in the pan. He gives the film all the right aural backing. The re-recording is neither too loud nor too soft. It is just about right. The songs, which are pictured beautifully, are cool and come as a balm among heightened emotional drama. The Akkam Pakkam song holds you in its agreeable embrace while Kanavellam touches your heartstrings with its pithy poignancy.

Thiru’s camera also highlights the script in beguiling colours. The way the young cameraman has captured the cool blue and green of Kerala and Vizag is a treat for the eyes. Anthony’‘s editing, shorn of all gimmicks, is very easy on the eyes add to the visual pleasure. The stunts too, fitting a film of this kind, is very realistic and reasonable. Thanks a million for going easy with the graphic enhancements.

The producer Suresh Balaje and Adlabs deserve plaudits for backing such a sincere project.

And the final word of praise should go to AL Vijay, who despite his relative lack of experience has handled a sensitive subject with nuanced ease. The touches he comes up with are worth savoring.

Kireedam fits the mood of a rainy season with its quiet honesty and the poignant poetry that life writes daily.

The story is an attempt to strike a different chord from the routine fare, both by way of plotting and characterization. But the inexperience of the makers comes in the way of building up on the knot that had potential. And in giving it a suitable celluloid projection. The script is about six youths, who, battered in life, form a gang and take to the fast and dangerous lane. Their sole aim is making money by any means. Ashok (Vishwa) is their leader. While the cops are at their heels, there is a mysterious character (Bhagyaraj) who gives them refuge. But the man has his own agenda. As the story unfolds, there are quite a few twists and turns and surprises. Betrayals and murders.

Director Suraj, who rendered a hit in Thalainagaram, has ventured to do a racy entertainer with Arjun shouldering the entire burden. The movie is inspired by the real life happenings in Papapatti and Keeripatti villages in Tamilnadu, where elections could not be held for nearly two decades.

Arjun is at his best. Handsome and agile, he is a delight to watch on the screen. A tailor-made role for Arjun, who excels in comedy too in the company of Vadivelu. Nila has nothing much but to ooze glamour. The menacing looks of Lal and a decent portrayal by Raghuvaran deserve a special mention.

However it is Vadivelu, who walks away with all honours. As head constable, Vadivelu doesn't fail to tickle the funny bone. His spontaneous wits are a delight to watch. Vaithiya and Senthil Kumar have handled the cinematography and have caught the action sequences well.

On the flip side, the movie drags a bit in the second half and illogical action sequences towards the climax spoils the party.

Veyil is a 2006 Tamil film directed by Vasantha Balan. Bharath and Pasupathy are the heroes where Bhavana, Priyanka and Shreya Reddy plays the female leads.The story is told through the protagonist Murugesan (Pasupathy) who recalls his childhood in Virudhunagar town. His father is a butcher who works hard to bring up his four children - two boys and two girls, and has a happy family.

Murugesan dotes on his younger brother Kathir and his weakness, like any other adolescent is love for movies (especially MGR films) that are screened in a local theatre. But one day life changes for him when his father catches him red-handed from the theatre after he bunks school. The child is severely punished. He runs away from home taking money and jewels.

Along the way Murugesan gets sidetracked from his intended destination of Chennai by a MGR Movie poster. He's shown watching several MGR shows, buying a change of clothes and eating a hearty meal with his ill-gotten money. After spending the night at local temple, he wakes up to find his money and other possessions missing. Murugesan is then taken under the wings of a theatre projectionist in a nearby town and slowly the theatre becomes his home. As an adult, he falls in love with Thangam (Priyanka), a beautiful girl who lives opposite the theatre but their love story does not have a happy ending. Murugesan is crestfallen after Thankam’s death and takes to the bottle. Sometime later the theatre is demolished, the owner citing loss of business.

He decides to return home after 20 years. The rest of the film is all about Murugesan’s mental turmoil, as he is caught between the deep love showered by his younger brother Kathir (Bharath) who runs a successful advertising agency and his guilt of not being a responsible son or elder brother. There is a parallel love story between Meenakshi (Bhavana), an innocent girl and Kathir. Then there is Pandi (Shreya Reddy) who is Murugesan's childhood sweetheart. The rest of the story is about what happens to Murugesan and Kathir.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Raghavan-feared by criminals, respected by the police force; tough, resourceful, has a keen mind and is ruthless with the bad guys.

His mentor and boss Arokiaraj (Prakashraj) calls upon him to help him find his missing daughter Rani.Rani has been brutalized and murdered in a deliberate and planned manner. Obviously by educated and very professional person or persons, from the slick handiwork of the gory evidence on the corpse and the bait that was used to provocate the police force.Raghavan promises to find the killer and bring justice and retribution.

Unfortunately, still more tragic events force Raghavan to visit the U.S. as a representative of the Indian Police Force - more murders, missing people and similar evidence suggesting links between the crimes done with Rani and the ones abroad. NYPD requests Raghavan's help in solving the case.

Aradhana (jyothiga) happens to Raghavan quite by accident. Her life and sorrows draw him initially in a platonic manner and then as someone who is more than just a concerned human being. A friendship (and maybe something more?) develops.

Before anything else, though, comes the work at hand and Raghavan's hard at it. Clues and trails lead him and his NYPD counterpart Anderson from one theory to another piece of evidence until, despite much lack of confidence from Anderson, Raghavan leads them both to a horrible discovery whose only plus point is that many unsolved cases finally get some answers! NYPD wakes up to some terrible truths and Raghavan's small case and crusade turns into a nation-wide hunt for killer or killers still on the loose.

And then we catch a glimpse of Amudha (Balajee) and Ilamaran - students of medicine with very dark sides to their nature. They are passionate, disturbed, psychotic and totally dangerous.

According to producer Shankar, 'After 28 years a Tamil movie would be centered around the happenings of a historical period - the King and Queen era'.

This is a historical movie. It will be a fun-filled laughathon. It is a difficult genre. But the team hopes to pull it off. It is something on the lines of the famous Hollwywood flick of the 80s History of the World.

The supporting cast is impressive in the form of Nagesh, Manorama, Nasser, Vennira Adai Moorthy, Sriman and Ilavarasu.

Hats off to Silambarasan for continuing the good run of his Manmadhan in Vallavan. A triangular love-story with twists and turns has been brought out well by the actor-director. Vallavan has excellent cinematography combined with racy background score making it for engrossing viewing.

Silambarasan occupies the screen all through, while Reema Sen has impresses all eve with her limited screen space. Nayantra and Sandhya do their best.However, the real hero of the movie has been Yuvan Shankar Raja. His peppy numbers and brisk musical score help sustain the momentum in the movie.

Amidst campus candy floss movie, Simbhu has dished out a forbidden kind of love story that happens among school students.The movie begins with a college student Vallavan (Silambarasan) falling in love with a professor Sandhya (Nayantra). Desperate attempts to impress her succeed. But Vallavan hides the truth that he is a student and three-years younger to Sandhya. Later, Sandhya, coming to know the truth, decides not to go ahead with her plans to marry a youth, who is younger to her.

Meanwhile a flash back reveals Vallavan’s romance with a classmate Geetha (Reema Sen). A hysteric Geetha ensures that Vallavan runs crazy behind her. Coming to know of her true nature, Vallavan resolves to teach her a lesson.Geetha returns one fine day only to inform Vallavan that she was the one who played spoilsport in the affair between him and Sandhya to teach him a lesson. The remaining story is about attempts of Vallavan to marry Sandhya but with Geetha going hammer and tongs to prevent it.

Silambarasan has utilized the opportunity well to glorify himself. He boasts himself uttering lengthy dialogues. But the man sure has oodles of energy and is a livewire all through.
Nayantra plays his lady love. Sandhya as Silambarasan’s friend has played her part well. Reema Sen, whose character resembles Neelambari of Padayappa, does what is expected of her. She even takes to arms to take revenge Silambarasan. She is, overall, very convincing.

The rest of the cast including Santhanam, S Ve Shekher fits well.

Priyan’s cinematography deserves a mention. His lens has captured the song sequences well. As we said, Yuvan is the backbone of the movie.

Guru !!!

The story is obviously a takeoff from Dhirubhai Ambani’s life and times. But that is just a starting thread. Using that, Mani’s spins a yarn (just about the right term to describe about a story that is about success in spinning mills and polyester fibre) that gives a feeling of comfort and warmth.

‘Guru’ begins with the young Gurunath (Abhishek) setting off to the arty and raucous Istanbul. In a sense, Istanbul proves to be what South Africa became eventually for the other great Indian dreamer ----Mahatma Gandhi ----- a seed of inspiration. Appropriately, Guru too invokes the ideas (though not the idealism) of ‘Bapu’ when he is towards the end pinned down by Indian authorities for transgressions of laws that are in the book.

Guru, though appreciated for his work ethic, is consumed by the desire to make his work come good for himself rather than waste it for others (in this context, the whites). So he throws up his job in Istanbul and comes down to his dusty hamlet in Gujarat. But here again, the roadblocks before the takeoff are many (parental disapproval, monetary dryness and a general small-minded approach).

Guru, who sees Sujatha (Aishwarya) in quaint circumstances, falls in love with her and marries her. But the bigger love is for the money that she brings along as dowry (it is a truth that he will come to face at an unexpected crossroad). This would be his opening gambit on a complex, chequered board of a game in which every coin is deemed a pawn by vested interests. Guru of course wants to be the king. He understands the system. More importantly, he understands men and their minds. He strikes up friendship, by chance, with a maverick press baron Mangaldas (Mithun Chakraborthy). It is what launches him into a tumultuous world and it is what holds him back later. It is an enigmatic relationship that even amidst the no-holds-barred fight, Guru is able to strike a beautiful and bouncy relationship with the multiple-sclerosis ridden daughter of Mangaldas (Vidya Balan).

The initial days in the market are hard slog and slugfest. Guru manoeuvres them all with commonsense and conviction. But he has to subvert the system (mind you, those were the times of license raj and quota rules). This is what gets the goat of the Mangaldas, an old-world journo, who, despite his outward brusqueness, likes to play within the rules.

What ensues is a high-stakes cat and mouse game with Mangaldas using his hotshot scribe Shyam (Madhavan) to dredge up details of off-the-book dealings of Guru. It is a fight between two equal enemies. Guru, despite playing by his own rules, wins popular support. It is on these crutches that he eventually hobbles out.

The story’s strength is in the details that are too difficult to explore and experience in words and overzealous adjectives. But in Mani’s expert eyes, everything parade out in a panache-filled procession.

In the end, the film is indeed a biopic, without the attendant dreariness.

Kastoori Raja delivered a hit through Thulluvatho Ilamai as he chronicled the process of growing up in this make or mar period. It was a youth subject for the grown ups. Here in Idhu Kadhal Varum Paruvam, you have women, full of oomph with Kiran particularly being voluptuous.

The story is about Surya (Harish Kumar). The teen school boy’s inner turmoil and his difficult coming of age is the story. His escapades and fantasies with his classmate Raji, model Manasi (Kiran) and a sex worker Swarna (Lakshmi Priya) form the story. The story moves from one fantasy infatuation to another. Towards the end, the characters realise the consequences of whatever has happened before.

The film has enough appeal to the youth section of the audience.

The music and the cinematography are good. Kastoori Raja’s avatar as a music director has exceeded expectations. Performances by the lead stars are good too. Kiran sizzles in a fantasy kind of character. Harish Kumar comes across as an eager and enthusiastic person.

Idhu Kadhal Varum Paruvam is an appealing film especially for those youngsters with a hormonal overdrive.

"Arputha Theevu" has Prithviraj as the hero with Bollywood actress Mallika Kapoor as the heroine. Manivannan, Karunas, Vaiyapuri and leading Malayalam comedian Jagadish are the other actors in the movie.

The story is similar to that of Gulliver's Travels. It is a story of an island where the men are born dwarf-like due to a divine curse while the women are as usual tall and extremely beautiful. Out of jealousy, the men guard the island from handsome outsiders. However, Prithviraj manages to land up there and fall in love with the chieftain's daughter, Mallika Kapoor. The story is how they both struggle in love and how their love triumphs after a series of obstacles.

Over 300 dwarf junior artistes have been romped in especially for this film to give a realistic touch. Story, screenplay and direction are by Vinayan, dialogues are by Rajan and lyrics by Pazhanibarathi, Pa. Vijay and Snehan. Jayachandran has scored the music. Shaji is the cinematographer and Palani is the stunt master. T. Gopalakrishnan and M.A. Vetrivel are the producers of this film.

Uyir is a fine piece of work, which has been handled very skillfully by director Samy. Director Samy and producer R.Balaji are walking the knife edge with this venture. Uyir is a very sensitive story about vehement and tender love, and the value of life. Kudos to the producer and director who have managed to make a success out of such a risky subject!

Sundar (Srikant) finishes his education in Australia and gets back home to live with his brother and sister-in-law Arundati (Sangeetha) in Ooty. The couple has a daughter Aishwarya (Baby Ramya). Theirs is a happy and cheerful family.
Anandi ( Samvruta) also lives with her parents in Ooty. Anandi’s niece and Aishwarya learn in the same school. Srikant and Anandi drop these two kids in school everyday. Their meeting and acquaintance starts in conflict and ends in love.
Sundar’s brother and sister-in-law work in the same office. Their marriage takes place against the will and consent of both the families. Suddenly, one day Sundar’s brother commits suicide. The reason of his death is a mystery to Sundar. He stays on in his brother’s house to take care of Arundati and Aishwarya. Meanwhile Arundati comes to know of Sundar’s love and asks him to wait a while, and promises that she’ll get him together with Anandi.
It takes quite a while to dawn on Sundar that Arundati is not all that she seems to be. She keeps planning to separate the Sundar and Anandi. On many occasions Arundati’s behaviour exceeds limits and is over the top. It is then that Sundar finds out the reason his brother committed suicide.

Roja Combines and Khaja Moideen have managed to produce and release this film after a lot of hiccups. It has been in the making for a long time and the patch work done to make it relevant to the changing situations is evident in the movie. It is out and out a Vijaykanth movie, sure to satisfy his fans.

The CBI Officer Kasi Viswanath is entrusted with the job of investigating the disappearance of Judge Sadasivam. He is assisted by Tamil Nadu Police Officer, Kesavan Nambiar and others. The dead body of the Judge is found and the trail leads to three top Police Officials and it ultimately leads to the Minister, Ilakkian.

Meanwhile, the three Police Officials are killed one by one and the needle of suspicion points to Kasi Viswanath himself. Intrigued by this, he starts looking for his look alike; whom he believes is the killer. His visit to Panchalankuruchi reveals some startling facts - the look alike is the killer and that he is his own brother, Perarasu. Perarasu wants to take revenge on the people who were responsible for the killing of his father, the most respected royal heir of that place. Having killed the three Police Officials, Perarasu, targets at the ex-Minister and also the Minister, Ilakkian. But Kasi Viswanath wants to uphold the rule of the land at any cost.

The gripping tussle between the brothers - one out to kill the Minister, Ilakkian and avenge his father's death and the other to stop it by any means and establish the law of the land - is interesting and fiery. Who succeeds in their pursuit forms the final moments of the movie which gives an interesting twist in the climax.

It is Vijaykanth all the way, as the honest CBI Officer, Kasi Viswanath and the brother Perarasu, who sets out to kill the wrong doers. He has ample scope to showcase his wares and give enough fodder for his fans. The heroine has very little to do. Prakashraj's ability as a seasoned artiste has been wasted in the role of Ilakkian. Similarly Pandiarajan has also been wasted. Anandraj(as Kesavan Nambiar), Sarathbabu(as Vijaykanth's father) and Chandrasekar have done their parts well.

The Director Udhayan, who has made a debut with this movie has made the narration with a good pace. He shows boldness in limiting the scenes for the heroine, having lesser fight sequences for Vijaykanth and by not having a song at all in the second half. Whether they were deliberate or were dictated by the compulsions of the problems the film has faced before release is not known. The music score is ample and is subtle. The editing and the camera work help a lot for the crispness of the film.

It is a regular entertainer for the Vijaykanth fans with a difference in Vijaykanth himself taking on the two diametrically opposite ways of opposing evil. We are not sure which way the Politician Vijaykanth advocates for the people.

Mazhai is a remake of the Telugu hit Varsham. Arjun (Jeyam Ravi), an unemployed youngster and Deva (Rahul Dev) a powerful don both fall in love with Sailaja (Shriya), a middle-class beauty, at the same time on a rainy day at a railway station. Arjun keeps bumping into Sailaja; coincidentally every time they meet, it is raining. This makes them both feel that it is perhaps the rain that keeps bringing them together, and they start falling in love. Deva, on the other hand, takes the help of her good-for-nothing father (Kalabhavan Mani) to get the girl.
After learning of the Arjun and Sailaja’s love, Deva and Sailaja’s father work up devious plans to break them up, finally succeeding in creating a rift between the two lovers. Though Arjun realises what is really happening, Sailaja falls prey to the foils of Deva and her father. The young lovers part ways; a film producer (Pyramid Natarajan) meets Shailaja and casts her as heroine in his film; Sailaja becomes a leading lady in movies while Arjun becomes a demolition expert with his uncle in a quarry.
When Sailaja becomes a film star, her father does not want Deva to marry her since he wants to keep for himself the goose that lays the golden eggs, and avoids Deva, cheating him of some money. The lovelorn and money-thwarted Deva, cheated by Sailaja’s father, finds out where Sailaja now lives and kidnaps her, right audaciously and thrillingly. Sailaja’s father now realizes that the only person who is daring enough to get his daughter back is Arjun and goes to him with his pleas. It takes much convincing, but Arjun finally decides to rescue Sailaja… but for his own reasons, reasons that he reveals later. But don't worry; this is a typical Tamil movie, and the end is conventional - they make up, her father repents, and they live happily ever after.

Thiru (Naren) works as a henchman with Annachi (Thandapani). Annachi adores him and sees in him his own bravery and extraordinary fighting abilities.
One day, Thiru stumbles upon Charu (Bhavana), a local NGO, who fights injustice. A quarrel ensues between them. They soon realize that it was a meeting of heart and soon start to admire each other.
Charu works towards transforming Thiru from an emotionless henchman to a loveable, kind-hearted guy. As a result, he and some of his gang members abandon their incorrigible life of gun culture and take up sales at the roadside hoping to lead a socially respectable life.

Charu sees a changed personality in Thiru and decides to marry him, with the consent of her father. But her hopes shatters after seeing Thiru clumped away in a police van from a brothel. She gives up her plans to become Thiru's life partner. Not withstanding the failure, Charu's father commits suicide. Charu blames Thiru for ruining her life and for her father's death. Thiru goes back to Annachi.
Charu decided to wed her own relative. Meanwhile, Annachi's son falls in love with Charu and wants to marry her. Annachi deputes Thiru to bring Charu.
Thiru devices his own plans in an attempt to thwart Annachi's nefarious plans and save Charu. How Thiru saves Charu from Annachi and ultimately re-unit with her forms the remaining part of the story.
Sunil alias Naren, the Malayalam actor, making his debut in Tamil has really played from his skin. Bhavana has a nice earthly quality here, with a gravelly voice and grit to her sashay. Mishkin is marvelously complemented with an ensemble of supporting actors playing as Thiru's friends, takes their part and work it for all its worth.
The screenplay writer and director Mishkin has a long way to go to find a place among the auteur in every sense.
While Mahesh Muthusamy's camerawork has provided a visual treat, the debutant music director Sundar C Babu has rendered few good compositions, which keep resonating at least for sometime after you are out of the theater. The outstanding number of all is the gana song: Vazha Meenu... sung by Ghana Ulaganathan.
The movie is not disappointing and it gives good entertainment in return for the money and time you spend on it.

From a serious cop to a caring doctor, it is a transformation for Vijayakanth. But his mission remains the same and that is, eliminating the evil elements from the society.
A one-man army, Vijayakanth goes on a 'revenge' mode and bumps off the rowdy elements, who are disturbing peace and tranquility in the city. For the flip side, the movie has loads of punch dialogues explaining Vijayakanth's political ideologies.
Jyothirmayi plays a typical heroine in Captain's films. After a few encounters, she gets inspired by his good ways and falls in love with him. Malavika plays a house surgeon in the hospital whose love for Vijayakanth is one-sided. Pradeep Rawat, Pithamagan Mahadevan and Aryan play the villains.
Dr Sabarivasan (Vijayakanth) is a senior cardiologist in Chennai Government Hospital. He tries to set things in order in the Indian medical system. He successfully performs an open-heart surgery on a young girl which wins him admiration from Nandhini (Jyothirmayi).
Dr Sabari comes across a gang of dreaded gangsters and he helps the police nab them. In turn, he incurs the wrath of the Vajravelu (Pradeep Rawat), a real estate shark, whose brother meets his fate at the hands of police after being caught by Dr Sabari.

It's now a showdown between Dr Sabari and Vajravelu. Who prevails in the end forms the crux.

The story is about Sanjay Ramaswamy (Surya), a rich businessman and the events surrounding his relationship with Kalpana (Asin).

Kalpana, an advertisement model goes around telling her advertisement crew that she is the love interest of Sanjay. She does this inspite of she never meeting him and also goes to an extent of giving an interview about her relationship to a popular magazine. Sanjay happens to hear about this through the media and wants to settle scores with her. On his way, he catches a fleeting glimpse of a young woman (who happens to be Kalpana) helping handicapped children to cross a street. It is love at first sight for Sanjay. He moves on the confront Kalpana at her advertisement studio. He is pleasantly surprised to realize that she is the same helpful woman he saw a while ago. He chooses to hide the fact from her that he is Sanjay. Kalpana eventually falls in love with him.

Once, while on a train to Mumbai, Kalpana saves a group of young girls from abuse by a group of goons. After a few days, the same goons come to Kalpana's house in order to avenge their embarrassment. Incidentally, Sanjay arrives at the scene and fight off the goons, but during the ensuing fight, Kalpana is murdered. The irony showcased is that Kalpana never finds out that he is Sanjay. The dacoits strike the downcast Sanjay on his head severely with a metal rod. Sanjay survives the blow, but suffers from a short-term amnesia. At any given time, he does not remember anything that happened more than 15 minutes back. He determines to take revenge from those responsible for Kalpana's death. The rest of the story is about how Sanjay goes about finding the goons despite his memory loss.

It’s time for directors to don the greasepaint. Cheran started this trend with `Autograph’ and then Suryah with `New’ and it is now Pravinkant director of `Rakshagan’, `Jodi’ and `Star’ who turns hero in `Thullal’. He has Gurlin Chopra and Sonika as his leading ladies. The reason is because of the snobbish attitude of the heroes. No one is willing to try out new subjects. When I told them the story they said that I should tell it to the heroine since the subject had no heroism. I then decided to put on the grease paint myself was the reason that Pravinkanth gave for his turning hero. Pravinkant earlier three films were all romantic entertainers and it’s main selling point was music by A R Rahman. This time without Rahman and no hero he has changed tracks.

The story is about a youth an ordinary man with no exceptional qualities. He reaches a stage in life when he has to get married. He is confused about what kind of girl should be his life partner .The two heroines Gurlin and Sonika add up to the confusion. Whom does decide to marry forms the story of ` Thullal’ says the director turned hero. The film has Vivek, Seetha Parthipan, Manika Vinayakam, Sumithra, Uma Padmanabhan, Sukumari and Seethalakshmi in the cast. Music by Dhina, cinematography by Suresh Devan the film is produced by Krishnadev and Sekar.

Directed by Jeeva and produced by Oscar V. Ravichandran for Oscar Films, Unnale Unnale stars debutant Vinay, Sada and Tanisha in the lead roles.

On the film, Jeeva says, “This is a love story which I have attempted to show in a different light. It is about how two contrasting characters come together. This story is something that everyone can relate to, you will certainly identify yourself or someone you know, with this story,” says Jeeva.

Vinay, the hero, is from Bangalore. Sada and Kajol’s sister Tanisha play the female leads. The story is woven intricately around the three. Raju Sundaram, Satish and Srinath have played cameos in this film.

Almost 70% of the film has been shot in Australia and the rest, in Chennai. Presently, the post-production works are going on for this film, which has seven songs including two bit songs, composed by music director Harris Jayaraj.

Of these, Vaali has penned the lyrics for two songs while Pa. Vijay has written the rest of the lyrics.

Son of veteran music composer Gangai Aramaran,Venkat Prabhu has done many things in films. Acting, singing, composing music. Now a new facet of his is out. Now he has taken a big leap to become a director.

Venkat Prabhu is directing the movie Chennai-28 which has a plethora of newcomers including director Agathiyan's daughter Vijayalakshmi.

As the number in the title implies, there will be 28 fresh faces in the cast. This is something unioque and apt. Says Venkat Prabhu, 'My father has been a big inspiration for me. I watched him direct movies when I was young.'

The movie is produced by S P B Charan and J.K Saravana has a huge star cast of 11 heroes and several heroines -including Mumbai model Christin.Prabhu says it is a great challenge to direct so many newcomers. I feel introducing talented artistes will only instill a healthy competitive spirit among the bunch.

On taking to direction, Venkat Prabhu, says, while pursuing my studies in London, I had the chance to learn the technical aspects of film-making. It has come handy now'.

On the movie, he says, 'the story is confined to the happenings in Mandaveli and R A Puram. A resident of those areas since my childhood inspired me to settle for that title.' Chennai -28 is also the pincode of the area.

The highlight of the movie would be Yuvanshankar's musical score.

Of the seven songs composed by Yuvan, Prabhu felt the pick could be the number of Gana Ulaganathan which has western beat accompanying it.

Vaali and Gangai Amaran have penned the lyrics, B Lenin handles editing and Shakti Saravanan cranks the camera. A couple of songs were also shot in Bangkok.

Venkat, thanking SPB Charan for giving him the opportunity, says, 'certainly my film would be different from others and would win laurels'.
SPB Charan, after the debacle in Mazhai, is very keen to make a success of this one.

Prabhu and Charan are close buddies for years together. This movie on friendship is a reflection of theirs too.

Mozhi is a clean entertainer that justifies the tagline that is found in the promotional materials of the film. “It is not the expression, but the emotion.” Indeed!

Mozhi is a musical love story. It is the light hearted and at the same time, intense portrayal of love between a musician and a deaf and dumb girl. Karthik (Prithviraj) and Viji (Prakash Raj) are musicians who work in the dream factory. They are keyboard players who live and love music. They exhibit an infectious enthusiasm and enjoy life the way it is.

It is at this juncture that Karthik chances upon Archana (Jyothika), and she happens to live in the same apartment as Viji and Karthik. Karthik looks up to this woman with awe for her sheer courage, as she takes on a man who bashes his wife in the middle of the road. Karthik realizes that she could just be the one that he has been waiting for all his life.

Karthik soon understands that Archana is a deaf and dumb woman and while Viji is full of misgivings about the relationship blooming into love, Karthik is confident and in fact, decides that Archana is the one for him.

Karthik gets acquainted with Archana’s friend Sheela (Swarnamalya) and starts learning sign language from her. He starts communicating with Archana using the sign language. We also get an insight into what a headstrong character Archana is. She is a self-dependant and outgoing woman.

The story then borders on the smiles, tears, emotional turmoil and contagious laughter of the foursome all the way till the climax.

Jyothika as Archana steals the show. Not surprising, because with every film of hers, we have seen myriad shades of her performance and they have showed us what a seasoned performer she is. She is deaf, she is mute. But she makes all of us talk volumes about her performance, just the way one did after watching Vikram in Pithamagan. She is absolutely credible as the obstinate and confident young woman.

Prithviraj as Karthik and Prakash Raj as Viji provide us with rib-tickling humour and wit here is not thrust or deliberate. It is an undercurrent in all their conversations and they score in performance as well.

Swarnamalya for Sheela is an apt choice. She has understood her character with amazing clarity and has got into the skin of it. She has done her role with ease and élan.

Brahmanandam as the menacing neighbour and MS Bhaskar as the professor are absolutely brilliant. MS Bhaskar, who had lost his memory due to the untimely loss of his son, lives in the same apartment as Archana and Karthik. His poignant portrayal and subtle performance definitely calls for appreciation.

The dialogue writer Viji has done a remarkable job. Every syllable in his dialogues is sensitive and sensible. He has blended sparkling wit and subtle strength in his dialogues which is definitely a high-point of the film. If for most of the time, the audience in the theatre is in splits, it is definitely due to him. Kudos to Viji for a job well-done!

Vidyasagar is absolutely commendable. For a story which borders on music, Vidyasagar has given just the right feel and emotion. His music is smooth and is never loud or distracting anywhere.

KV Guhan’s cinematography and Kasi Viswanathan’s editing are neat and are of first-rate. Art director Kathir has lent creative touches with brilliant sets which strike a chord in the viewers’ minds. His sensitive set in the form of Jyothika’s room deserves mention.

Radha Mohan has given us clean entertainers like Azhagiya Theeye and Ponniyin Selvan before. With this film, he has joined the bandwagon of directors who remain uncompromising on quality. His screenplay is taut. Subtle directorial touches in the form of the bulbs burning bright when Karthik sees Archana and when Viji takes a liking for Sheela are exemplary. Mention can also be made of the gift Archana gives to Karthik (a violin made of soap), the musical clock, Archana being able to feel music by keeping her hands on the speakers, and the delicate humour that sneaks up when a neighbour (Neelima Rani) takes a liking for Karthik. Such nuances have made the film more interesting.

On the whole, Mozhi transforms you into another world where there is just laughter and beauty everywhere. John Keats once said, "A thing of beauty is a joy forever." And Mozhi is joy!

With a winner in the form of story, Vijay in the company of Prabhu Deva has come out with an action-packed entertainer. With typical 'Vijayisms' (action, humor and punch dialogues) finding a place at right intervals, he steals the show and his charm is spread all through the movie. The life and blood of the movie, the actor charms the audience in dance and stunt sequences. His characterization, though not unfamiliar to the film-buffs, is made interesting by director Prabhu Deva as he has let Vijay to be himself on the screen.

Prabhu Deva and Vijay leave their magical presence especially in the dance sequences. There are five choreographers for the film and each one has put in enough effort and got the best out of Vijay, who is a talented dancer. The choreography for the peppy songs is entertaining and attractive.

Asin is attractive and plays a typical heroine falling in love with a macho-man. She does have the opportunity to shake her legs with Vijay. Though she looks naïve in few scenes, she is also charming and bubbly and has done her role with ease. What stands out, probably, is her ease at dancing, considering that the steps are not usual or simple. Both Vijay and Asin share terrific on-screen chemistry. Prakash Raj as the notorious Don Alibhai does an excellent job. His mannerisms and body language would surely win applause from the film-buffs.

Napoleon plays an honest police commissioner in the hunt of criminals. Hats off to him for playing the role with utmost grace. The dialogues during the press meet deserve kudos and Napoleon has delivered them well. Vadivelu evokes laughter with his comedy. He succeeds in tickling the funny bone. He dons the role of a kung-fu instructor. Tamizh (Vijay) is a hardcore criminal, who can do anything for money and also change loyalties for currency. He meets Sruthi (Asin) and love is the immediate offspring between the two. The sequences that follow are interesting and arouse curiosity, as Asin is a simple woman with conventional expectations from her man whereas Vijay is a ruffian who can do anything for money.

A villainous cop attracted by Sruthi threatens her mother to send her daughter with him. Enters Tamizh as a savior for Sruthi and her family. Tamizh, who works for an underworld gang and he soon rises in life, owing to his bravery and never-say-die attitude. The sequences that throw light on the hooligan attitude and ‘can’t-care-any-less’ stance of Tamizh offer a lavish treat for Vijay’s fans. This attitude, however, comes as a rude shock for Sruthi and this results in a conflict. Despite this hardcore criminal attitude of Tamizh, Sruthi cannot help falling head over heels in love with him. Tamizh’s boss and an international don Alibhai (Prakash Raj) arrives from abroad and thereafter, the story takes an unexpected turn with twists, suspense and surprises, all neatly packaged and presented as an engrossing narrative.

Stunts by Vijayan are a major attraction of the movie. The chasing sequences have been captured well by Nirav Shah's lens.

Kola Bhaskar’s editing is crisp with fast-paced cuts. All credit must be given to director Prabhu Deva for managing to sustain the tempo throughout. He has given a perfect formula film for Vijay which should work out well with the masses. He seems to have given more thrust on expressions and all his characters are there, doing what Prabhu Deva wanted from them.

For the flip side, one can mention Asin’s make-up in certain shots, which could have been better. Excellent choreography, thrilling action sequences and catchy songs besides cool 'punch lines from Vijay contribute for a cracker in Pokiri. It is not just these alone, but also editing, cinematography and re-recording as well, as all the departments have joined together to create an interesting potpourri.

To sum up, the movie is an action-packed film with loads of fun and thrill. Pokiri is a sweet Pongal treat for Vijay fans

Known for soft romantic love stories, director Ezhil is now on a different track. The director is now experimenting with action and adventure.

Deepavali starring Jayam Ravi and Bhavana, directed by Ezhil and produced by directed Lingusamy, revolves around the life of a Chennai-based gangster.

Ezhil, whose earlier movies like Thullada Manamum Thullum and Poovellam Un Vaasam won him a good name, has come out with a pacy screenplay and quick narration of events in Deepavali.

A typical commercial entertainer, the film promises a lot of action with a romantic story woven in. Ravi plays Billu, the son of local bigwig Mudaliar (Vijay Kumar) who owns fishing boats and runs a call taxi service. Mudaliar's mission in life is to give refuge, and to reform all rowdies who want to turn over to a new leaf.

A major portion of the movie was shot in a huge set erected near Royapuram shore replicating Chennai slums. Also a song sequence was shot in Oman.

Lingusamy was all praise for Ezhil. “I was highly impressed with his screenplay in Thullada Manamum Thullum. I am confident that he will repeat his magic in Deepavali.”

Thanking Lingusamy for the opportunity, Ezhil said, ”The story was conceived almost a year ago. When I approached Editor Mohan, he referred me to Lingusamy. Today, Deepavali is ready and raring to go.”

Special mention should be made of Yuvan Shankar Raja, whose tunes are really catchy.

“The entire unit was friendly and it was like a picnic working in the movie,” says Ravi.

Bhavana, who is on a good run in Tamil, has enjoyed her role in Deepavali.

Anniyan is the story of Ramanujam "Ambi" Iyengar (Vikram), a brahmin lawyer who suffers from Multiple Personality Disorder. Ambi is an innocent and honest lawyer. If he comes across anyone not obeying the rules he files cases against them but all his efforts go in vain.

His constant habit to be perfect in rules and honesty leads him to develop a Multiple Personality Disorder in which a new character in him grows as anniyan (Vikram) and starts a website called www.anniyan.com [www.aparichit.com in the Hindi version] to hear people's complaints. This anniyan is a violent man and the Ambi in him whenever he comes across a person who does not obey rules he makes complaints in his website. When he is Anniyan, he goes and kills them by methods used for torturing people in hell. He apparently takes the definition of these methods from the Garuda Purana.

During the first half, Anniyan kills 3 different people due to their actions:

* A man who did not stop to save a person in critical condition. Anniyan forces a herd of buffaloes to stampede him to death. He calls this murder "Anthakoopam", a Sanskrit word and one of the punishments in the Garuda Purana.
* A chef who fails to provide decent food for railway passengers. Anniyan tosses him into a pot and frys him to death. This punishment is called "Kumbhipakam". The chef was the brother of DCP Prabhakar (Prakash Raj) and the death caused Prabhakar to rise with anger, promising to kill his brother's murderer when he is found.
* A factory owner who makes faulty motor parts. He sends a group of thugs to kill Ambi, but this triggers Anniyan, who knocks out all the men. Later, Anniyan ties the owner to a tree and dumps leeches onto his body. This punishment is called "Krimiibhojanam"

Meanwhile, DCP Prabhakar and Chari (Vivek), a friend of Ambi, are after the murderers.

Ambi is in love with his neighbor Nandhini (Sadha). After she rejects him, Ambi develops another personality, a ramp walk model named Remo. Nandhini instantly falls for Remo and his tricks.

Later, Nandhini acquires land, but tries to cheat the government out of taxes. Ambi chooses not to help her, but when Nadhini tells Remo, Anniyan takes over and goes after her. Just as Anniyan is about to toss her into a pit of fire, Anniyan reverts back to Ambi. He is admitted to a hospital where he is diagnosed with a multiple personality disorder. It is at this hospital that Ambi reveals a dark secret from his past when he is hypnotized. When he was a young boy, corruption and incompetence in the police force and elsewhere had resulted in the death of his sister. After listening to this story, the doctor (Nassar) concludes that the death of Ambi's sister resulted in the development of the psychological disorder. According to the doctor, Remo will cease to exist only if Nandhini accepts Ambi's love. However, Anniyan will cease to exist only when the country is reformed. Nandhini eventually accepts Ambi's love and Remo disappears.

Ambi is finally caught and is sentenced to two years of psychological treatment at which time if he is cured, he will be released. When he is released, he relapses when traveling in a train, after a man refuses to stop drinking in the presence of ladies. Apparently, the man is the same person who indirectly, became a cause for Ambi's sister's death due to his negligence of duty. He kills the man, hiding the crime from Nandhini as the credits start rolling.

Kumaran (Ravi), a college student is extremely close to his mother Mahalakshmi (Nadhiya) and shares a special bond with her. Mahalakshmi, who is a lecturer in a college, is separated from her husband Eshwar (Prakash Raj). Kumaran is passionate about kickboxing and his mother is highly supportive of her son's passion. Meanwhile, Kumaran falls in love with a Malayali girl (Asin).

Soon, Mahalaxmi, who is a heart patient, succumbs to the illness and collapses while in college. While on her deathbed, she pleads Kumaran to go and stay with his father in Malaysia who also happens to be a kickboxing champion. Kumaran, who was always raised by his mother, had developed a 'sort-of' dislike for his father and initially refuses to go. However, to keep the word that he gave to his mother on her deathbed, she goes to Malaysia. When he reaches there, he is shocked to see that his father has married again and also has a grown up daughter by the second wife.

Not wanting to create further tension, Kumaran takes up a job as a helper at his father's kickboxing coaching academy, not revealing that he knows kickboxing. Meanwhile, Eshwar has immense faith in one of his students and train him for the next National championship. Unfortunately, the guy turns out to be a bad man who not only molests Kumaran's sister but also joins the rival gang for the final fight. That is when Eshwar realises Kumaran's talent in kickboxing and trains him against his unfaithful student.

Does Eshwar along with Kumaran succeed in defeating the student? What will happen when Eshwar realises that Kumaran is his first-born? The film is worth watching.

The film is woven in 'sentiments' and will suffice all those who like some tear-jerking emotional scenes. While the first half is interesting, the film drags a little in the second half. Ravi has given some heart-rending performances in the film. As a son - for whom life revolves around his mother, he brings to fore all the emotions, just right. In action sequences, he is full of robust energy. His eyes radiate a rare mix of innocence and rage. Nadhiya, in her second coming is as usual very impressive. Prakash Raj is good too and so is Asin who looks very petite and beautiful. However, her character is not demanding enough and she did not have much scope in the film. The comedy by Vivek and Venniradai Moorthy is a little too 'crude' and one tends to wonder how it hasn't escaped the Censors' scissors! The music of Srikanth Deva is a major disappointment. The cast also includes Vaiyapuri, Ishwarya, OAK Sundar, Manobala and Janakaraj.

The story is centred on Bharani (Vishal). This loud, angry young man, who doesn’t mind letting his fist fly furiously, is totally in awe of his uncle Salt Saravanan (Prabhu). Vishal and his mother (Rohini) live with Saravanan and his mother (Manorama). It is a family that is typical to most Tamil movies. The villagers just venerate this big family.

Pitted against them is the other big one ----PVS family (peopled by Nadhiya, Vijayakumar and Nasser). And then there is Banu (Banu). Bharani, as cinema rules mandate, loves Banu. In a sense, he has rights to marry Banu as we are told that Sakunthala (Nadhiya) is the estranged wife of Saravanan. The two had parted ways over Saravanan’s extreme fondness for his sister (Bharani’s mother).

It all builds towards a heightened climax as the two young lovers try to hammer out peace between the two families and principally between the at-war hubby and wife.

Hari has mixed all the ingredients so well in a smart storyline, so much so that you get a new flavour. Vishal is full of virility and his action sequences are bravado stuff. Newcomer Banu, a Nayanthara look-alike, does what is required of her. She looks a bit callow though. Veterans Prabhu and Nadhiya offer splendid backing to the script as it is their rivalry that is the fulcrum of the movie. Nasser, Vijayakumar and others do their job diligently.

Yuvan, though not in prime form, shows glimpses of his talent. The camera and other technical works are okay. The blazing and dusty streets, the sword swishes, the cavalcade of sumo’s and other SUVs, the dialogues of sibling love and big family ethos...you get it all in the film.

The prediction of some sages that a child would be born to an elderly couple turn out to be true. The sages visit this special child, name him Baba, and tell the mother that they would return and take him back with them at an appropriate time. Baba grows up with all sorts of vices under the indulgent eye of his widowed mother and his uncle. As an atheist, gambler, alcoholic and a rowdy. The latter quality, of course, reserved for the deserving villains! Baba falls in love with his new neighbour Chamundeeswari, but when it comes to marriage she dithers. She does later on return to Baba, but this time it is Baba's turn to reject her.

Baba has this on-going feud with Purshothaman and Ramasamy the Chief minister and his minister respectively, both enemies of the people. Ramasamy had usurped the land occupied by Baba's people. Baba had bashed up Ramasamy's son resulting in unending violence and clashes between the two parties. There is quite a few lines with political overtones in the film.

There is again this cranky tramp-like character hovering around Baba and mouthing philosophies. After an elephant blesses Baba with his trunk, the cranky sage transports him to the Himalayas. It's here that Baba realises who he really is, about his previous birth, and the reason for his being reborn again. Baba is now given a 'manthra' to recite, and a 'mudra' to go with it, using which he can get seven of his wishes fulfilled. Baba and his gang of cronies (mostly comics) waste most of it by trying to test if it was working. The scenes of the 'wish fulfillment' could have been more imaginative. There's the unwanted interpolation of the character of Neelambari from Padayappa into this film, in one of these 'wish fulfillment' scenes.

Baba uses his wish to get 'good' minister Kandha the seat of the Chief minister. The unscrupulous Purushottaman - Ramasamy duo shorn of their powers, get a 'tantric' to get the 'manthra' and 'Mudra' from Baba, but the attempt fails. In the confrontation that follows, Baba's mother is killed. A disillusioned Baba, now shorn of all earthly desires decides to leave for the Himalayas with the sages who had come to take him. But it's not all over. The new C.M. Kandha is killed, and Baba has to make his final choice. No guesses of what Baba finally decides! Would he be the king or the king-maker?

Rajini is vibrant in the dance numbers, like he still has it in him to match strides with the younger crop of heroes. The blazing fiery looks are all there, the intensity too. But it's not like he has not done it before. And there's a desperation which shows through. Emotional performances from Sujatha as the mother, and Nambiar, as the uncle. Not much for Koirala for performance here, she is discarded by the hero without an afterthought. If Sanghavi thought she'd had it good acting with the superstar, she'll have a change of mind after viewing the couple of vague scenes she's been given. Goundamani, to a large extent, keeps the proceedings alive. The Japanese actress has been sidelined completely.

Sita (Sita) is on the lookout for a bride for her son Surendar (Prithviraj). Sita finds herself attracted to the domestic help Sumathy (Saranya) she has hired to manage a palatial bungalow she and her businessman husband Santosh (Prakashraj) have purchased.

With her winning ways, Sumathy gains the affection of Sita, who has decided that Sumathy is the bride for her son. But fate plays a cruel joke. Sita dies in a freak accident and the secret dies with her.

The distraught son, Surender is determined to marry the bride of his mother's wish. And in this mission, he seeks the help of (who else?) Sumathy.

Sumathy, however, shies away from revealing the truth. But Surender's friend Sampoornam (Bhagyaraj) lets the cat out of the bag in the climax scene!

If Saranya takes the cake in the acting department, Prithviraj as Surender is not far behind. Prithvi puts a lot of passion into his acting and excels in the comic interludes with superb sense of timing. Prakash Raj, Sita and Bhagyaraj do their jobs creditably.

Newcomer Dharan's music also lifts the film to a new level. The film boasts of two three peppy and melodious numbers which are on the way to becoming chart-busters. "Unnai Kandaene…" and "Oru Nodi Iru Nodi…" are the picks of the lot.

All in all, ‘Parijatham’ makes you feel good. Like the flower, ‘Parijatham’, the film, also leaves behind its lingering fragrance. Well done, Bhagyaraj!

An entertainer by director Shafi, a remake of his Malayalam hit "Thommanum Makkalum".

The story is about Govindan (Manivannan) and his adopted sons Aadi (Pashupathy) and Mathi ( Vikram) who are petty robbers in their hometown. Both Aadi and Mathi were orphans and thick friends who ran away from the orphanage together, when they were small. They are tough and don't care for anything or anybody other than their adopted father who they met on the streets. Govindan who had lost his family in an accident, took to the kids. The trio had been together ever since.

The movie begins with them deciding to change for good and start life all over as good hardworking citizens. They sell their home, buy a lorry and leave their hometown for good. On the way one night their lorry breaks down in the outskirts of a small village. They get involved with a family there - a retired agricultural Officer Vijayakumar and his three daughters and stay back to protect them from the wiles of Kalingarayar (Murali), the landlord who rules the village. The officer is indebted to Rayar and has pledged his house to him.

The rest of the story deals with their fights with Rayar and his men, the truce between them, with Rayar's only daughter Seetha (Asin) getting engaged to Mathi, the entry of the real villain Manicka Vel (Biju Menon); Thevar's late wife's brother who had an eye on Seetha, he trying to frame Aadi in a theft, the misunderstanding caused by him between Aadi and Mathi and the inevitable happy ending..

The movie is predictable to the core but has light hearted humour and a smooth pace. The bonding between the main protagonists is depicted well. Songs by Vidyasagar have nothing fresh about them, but the numbers Sollitharava and Chellame Chellame are hummable. The cinematography and the settings are good.

Vikram after his hit Anniyan portrays a light hearted role very different from the latter and gives a commendable performance. But it is Pasupathy who steals the show with his perfect comic timing. The sequences where he tries to woo one of Vijayakumar's daughter with his broken English is hilarious. The villain of the film Virumandi proves that he can handle comical roles equally well. The heroines have nothing much to do. Manivannan as the father is good.

Overall it is a clean family entertainer worth a watch.

Unending caste discrimination surrounds Puliangulam and Vepangulam villages to such an extent that small incidents lead to shedding of blood to very large extents. Under such circumstances, Sakthivel (Simbu), son of Puliangulam Periyasamy (Raj Kiran), falls in love with Angel Devi (Sonia Agarwal), daughter of Vepangulam Soosai (Nazar). As Soosai comes to know of the issue and that his daughter is also in love with Sakthivel, he opposes the affair and decides to send Angel to a convent to become a Nun. Unable to disobey her father’s words, Angel decides to let go her love and become a nun. She does not change her mind, even after everyone comes to know the truth that she is not Soosai’s real daughter. Just as arrangements are made for the final procedures for her to become a nun, there comes an opposition following which the story tells whether the two lovers unite.

Silambarasan sans his usual mannerisms fits the college student role. Hari has brought out somewhat a natural performance from Simbu. But he will have to improve a lot by way of performance. Sonia Agarwal though looks matured is at ease as a soft-spoken Angel who comes from a staunch Christian family. Vadivel brings in some lighter moments. Nazar, Rajkiran, Rekha, Akash are sufficient. Hari’s commencing the movie with the very beginning scene of religious misunderstanding between two sects of people arouses interest. But as the movie proceeds, the screenplay is unpredictably inconsistent and consistently predictable. Dialogues are good at times, but they are only useful in making the things more melodramatic. And as a director, Hari does not live up to the very high standards he set for himself in Saami. Harris Jayaraj is a big disappointment. The music is a rehash of his earlier films KK and Saami. Priyan’s camera work and Peter Haynes stunts are average.

Anbuselvan (Surya), Sethu, Ilamaran and Srikanth are young straightforward IPS officers.

Expectedly, the ruthless, hardcore villains put up a stiff resistance and life turns topsy-turvy for the quartet. Unwittingly Maya (Jyotika) becomes the target of underworld kingpin Pandia (Jeevan). Her romance and later marriage to Anbuselvan put her in great peril.

"Kaakha Kaakha" is just another story of vendetta. But the treatment and the characterisation make it commendable.

Jyotika looks ravishing in the role of a responsible schoolteacher who falls in love with Anbuselvan. The pair has an appealing screen presence.

Jeevan, the "University" hero, is the proverbial Evil pitted against Good. His voice that is very different from a villain's strident decibel level makes an impact.

Harris Jeyaraj's score for "Kaakha Kaakha" has already been acclaimed a hit. R. D. Rajashekar's camera is a visual delight.

Anbuselvan's life in flashback, in the first person commentary form gets monotonous at times. Gautam could have added a couple of more ways to unfold the hero's past. And how come an astute officer like Anbuselvan fails to see through Srikanth's sudden change in behaviour?

"Kaakha Kaakha" is for action lovers who believe in logical storylines and deft treatment.

Lesa Lesa is a mixture of big youth star cast, Few Good Comedy and few "Blade" scenes and an OK looking heroine and a confused storyline. Result is a mixture of everything but at the end one cannot feel good that he or she has watched a good movie. Shyam owns a Big Estate in Ooty. His friend Vivek who is a body shopper Is a good for nothing guy who roams in that area and people are searching for him because he promised many that he is going to place people in Dubai? He roams in that area with a fully covered helmet so that no one can see him. His Grandpa "Radha Ravi" thinks that he is doing real well in Business and he agrees to visit him with his family and grand daughters. Vivek has no other option than asking his friend Shyam to act as his manager. Shyam agrees to the drama.

Trisha gets introduced as one of the Grand daughter of Radha Ravi and "Murai Ponnu" of Vivek. After Initial fights with Trisha, Shyam starts to like Trisha. When he says his love to her she gives "HALWA OF THE WORLD" to him and says that she is already married. She also gives another HALWA and says that she "LIKES HIM BUT DOES NOT LOVE HIM". I don’t know how its possible in for some one in LOVE to "LIKE SOMEONE But NOT LOVE SOMEONE" Its a confusion and no one has a answer for this "LOVE AND LIKE" Confusion till now. Then comes the flashback of Trisha. Madhavan gets introduced in the movie as a College Professor who is against a "Rowdy Gang" in the college. TRISHA is a student of MADHAVAN and she falls in love after seeing his courage to fight against the Rowdy Gang in the college. In a tight circumstance Madhavan and Trisha Gets married. The fight between the rowdy gang and Madhavan grows and he was forced to kill couple of the rowdy gang members and goes to jail and gets a Life Imprisonment. That’s the end of flash back. Shyam after hearing the Flash back says that he still loves Trisha and is ready to get married to her. Then comes the climax?? "Did Trisha Marry Shyam”? Watch the movie and know the result!!!!
